A.I. is dividing us. The Social Dilemma – TCF Review

TCF Review: Straight Up Solid/Braniac/a bit Dark (see definitions)

Besides the creation of an indestructible robot army like in the Terminator films, how can technology and artificial intelligence destroy our society? From within. The Social Dilemma is a 2020 documentary, streaming on Netflix, revealing a recent movement that brings awareness to how technology is contributing to the polarization going on in the world today – SOCIAL MEDIA. And this new movement is being pushed by none other than a group of top tech expert whistleblowers.

Have you not been the least bit skeptical of the predictive, auto-populating text that shows up when performing a search on Google? Do you believe that Facebook does an amazing job of recommending all the relevant and trending cat videos? And your news feed is completely harmless, right? Most people would agree social media adds value to our lives. So, what’s the problem then?

Technology’s promise to keep us connected has given rise to a host of unintended consequences that are catching up with us. If we can’t address our broken information ecosystem, we’ll never be able to address the challenges that plague humanity.“. – The Social Dilemma

Let’s say, for example, you begin typing the words: face masks… into a search engine. The predictive text may autocomplete your sentence with the following: face masks... save lives. But what if the predictive text autocompletes your sentence with: face masksare unconstitutional or don’t work. The proprietary algorithms, the artificial intelligence (A.I.), performing these tasks have one primary goal that is to feed you content that will gain the most amount of your attention. The A.I., which has more data about you than you can possibly imagine, then promotes one of these searches specifically to YOU based upon your data profile, online viewing habits, and location. Seems pretty innocent in the context of trendy cat videos but the problem is that it does this with ‘everything’, including polarizing topics facing the world today, like face masks and global warming.

What is good? The documentary is extremely relevant given the polarization going on in the world today (2020 election, BLM, global warming, and face masks). I hope that the documentary sheds some light on how information is being fed to you and how this technology may not be presenting you with unbiased facts.

What is bad? The film focuses purely on the negative, dark aspect of technology and does not promote any of the positives but that’s the point. There aren’t many solutions being offered in the film.
