Streaming Today 9/9…

Hulu and Netflix are releasing some interesting content today (9/9).

Today, Netflix is releasing the the French coming of age drama, Cuties, which has already made major headlines due to a Netflix marketing poster which many viewed as sexualizing children. The film has since received positive reviews by critics. The Netflix description is “Eleven-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.”

Hulu is releasing its new streaming comedy series, Woke, which is about an up-and-coming cartoon artist whose life changes drastically after a run-in with the police. Starring Lamorne Morris, T. Murph, and Blake Anderson.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things – TCF Review

TCF Review: Award Worthy/Brainiac/Dark (see definitions).

ITOET is written and directed by Charlie Kaufman, a filmmaker who is otherwise known for Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Anomalisa. I recommend watching ITOET if you have enjoyed (or appreciated) any of these award nominated films. ITOET is based on the 2016 novel of the same name written by Iain Reid. Jessie Buckley and Jesse Plemons both put on an all-star performance in this 2 hr 14 min dark, horror-drama about a young woman taking a road trip to meet her boyfriend’s parents at their remote farm during a snowstorm. Sound scary? Yes and no. The movie is a slow burn, tension-building thriller which evolves primarily through the character dialogue and cinematography. Think of it more as an ‘artsy’ or Art House style film. It feels poetic.

What is good? Jessie B. and Jesse P. put on academy award worthy performances. The sharp and poetic dialogue/narration. Refreshing for a horror movie.

What is bad? If you don’t like ‘artsy’, stay away. This movie is built on the dialogue so stay away if you’re not in the mood for listening.

Drunk Parents

TCF Review: Appeased/LOL. (see definitions)

If you’re looking for a fun-ny, date night movie with a few drinks… then check out Drunk Parents on Netflix. “Two desperate parents go to extreme lengths to hide their dire financial straits from their daughter and friends.” Streaming on #Netflix.

Cobra Kai Hits #1

#CobraKai, now streaming on #Netflix, has jumped to the number one spot on the streaming service after its first weekend. The power of Netflix has lifted the show from obscurity to popularity with more seasons to come. The show’s first two seasons had debuted on YouTube Premium.

Tenet – TCF Review

TCF Review: Straight-Up Solid/Brainiac/Original-ish/Edge of Your Seat/Action Junkie (see definitions).

Once you’ve seen Tenet for the first time, then you can watch it a second time to actually follow along. Visionary writer and director, Christopher Nolan, uses the concept of entropy as the backdrop to this mind-bending secret agent thriller. The action occurs through ‘forward moving time’ and ‘time moving in reverse’ (otherwise known as ‘inversion’). The movie doesn’t provide the viewer with enough time to absorb what they are watching so multiple viewings should make the movie get BETTER each time. Is it possible that Nolan is creating films (Tenet, Inception, Memento) that need to be watched multiple times as part of a strategy to double or triple his movie sales…

What is good? Ingenious, fun to watch and visually stunning. The movie score has a haunting quality that keeps the viewer feeling impending doom throughout. Very unique.

What is bad? It is difficult to follow and appreciate the first time through.
